Climate Action

Climate Action

As the climate change in Somalia is characterized by recurrent droughts, floods and desertification which leads to failed crops, loss of livestock and Somalia’s chronic food insecurity. Excess use of natural resources and charcoal for cooking purposes and overall poor environmental management has led the country into poor environment across the country. There is lack of government institution that is responsible for collecting DATA or conducting Climate Change Research due to weak commitment by the government.  Further, there is a deficit in local research capacity at all levels. This gap affects the country’s ability to conduct vulnerability assessments, forecast climate impacts, and evaluate the effectiveness of adaptation and mitigation measures.

Therefore, ANPPCANSOM works to help communities to increase their climate resilience and mitigate all negative impact of climatic shocks. It advocates for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and improvement of national adaptation strategies for climate Action plans. In line with the government institutions, ANPPCANSOM strives for the realization and implementation of NDC, where ANPPCANSOM supports relevant authorities at both regional and community levels to prioritize resilient infrastructure, suitable water management systems, agricultural adaptation and the protection of livelihood systems in reflection of climate-induced disruptions.

Furthermore, ANPPCANSOM stands with the most vulnerable groups and communities affected by climate shocks and supports them in building -up traditional practices that can serve as a crucial start-up point for the climate-action efforts to enhance system resilience at the national level. Other challenges in the Climate action efforts in Somalia is to find an efficient mix of mitigation and adaptation solutions that can bounds climate change and its dare impacts. However, this may not be rational unless national climate action policies and regulatory systems with re-enforcement structures is being considered effectively– and eventually, eliminate all fragmentation of policy landscapes between the federal government and states.

ANPPCANSOM is a child & Women rights-oriented organization who are more vulnerable than the rest and most affected by the climate change cycle. Hence ANPPCANSOM turns its attention to work with relevant actors to help that group and advocates for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and improvement of national adaptation strategies for Climate Action plans which is affecting the health status of most vulnerable category of women and children.
